ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS

 

The student will understand that:

1.

Language is a reflection of culture (similarities and differences in school life, family life, sports, travel, and eating habits and customs in Spanish-speaking countries and the United States).

2.

There are structural similarities as well as differences between Spanish and English for effective communication.

3.

The linguistic roots of many English words come from the Spanish language.

4.

Cognates are an important and useful vocabulary concept in both languages.

5.

Meaning of new vocabulary can be derived from context.

6.

A background in English grammar can facilitate the acquisition of Spanish as a second language.

7.

Certain idiomatic expressions exist in different forms between the two languages.

8.

In Spanish, as in English, there is more than one way to express meanings for certain words.
