The First Crusade was the Pope’s successful attempt to recover the Holy Lands from the Muslims. The Pope promised that anyone who fought or died in the Crusade was going to have his sins forgiven by God. The Crusaders’ first target was the fortress of Nicea and it was quickly conquered because its leader was away fighting.

Their 2nd target was Antioch, a heavily fortified Turkish city. It took 7 months for it to be conquered by the Crusaders. They suffered some losses, but the way to Jerusalem was now open. |

The Second Crusade was from 1145-1149. It was to defeat the Muslims that were still threatening to retake the Holy Lands. Armies from England, France, and Germany marched to Constantinople. They would cross to Anatolia and destroy the Turkish armies. The kings of France and Germany led the armies but were both soundly defeated at Anatolia. The Second Crusade was a failure because there wasn’t any real communication between the kings. |
