PARENT/TEACHER ORGANIZATION (PTO)
The PTO's mission is to support the educational programs that go on in the school and to keep the parents informed of pressing issues in the community that might affect our school. Fundraisers are a means to provide extra programs within the school for students. Because of the generous support of the parents, guardians, staff, and friends, we are able to fund many programs for our students. Here are some of our yearly programs and event the PTO sponsors and supports:
Cultural Arts Programs: - Throughout the year - Authors, illustrators, speakers and performers come to Great Neck and expand the students' knowledge and give a deeper appreciation for the arts.
School Store: - every Friday morning before school-Students get the opportunity to do a little shopping for them.
Great Strides Race: September -Great Neck children, parents and community members race to raise funds. The 5-K, a certified race that attracts both novices and serious racers from around the state, typically starts at around noon; shorter children's races (for kindergarteners and up) begin earlier in the day. A wonderful picnic follows the final race.
Halloween Party: October -Great Neck children and their family's meet in costume to venture into frightening dungeons and forests hear spooky stories, play tricky games and dance. This is an evening of great fun for the whole family!
Pot Luck Supper: November - An opportunity for Great Neck families to bring their favorite dish to share and socialize. This is a great time for children and adults alike from the Great Neck School to meet and talk. Great Neck Families are responsible for bringing a dish to share.
Math Night: November- Teachers and Parents of Great Neck School volunteer to run several math-oriented games that are fun for the whole family. Children do puzzles, build symmetrical shapes, count candy, and measure everything they can get their hands on. Math is a blast at Family Math Night!
Holiday Bazaar: December -Great Neck families donate several small (dollar-store or other inexpensive gifts) throughout the first few months of the school year, and then these gifts are displayed for the children to buy-for a very nominal price- just before the holidays. Children delight in buying holiday gifts for loved ones, and younger children get plenty of help choosing gifts and keeping within their budget. Moms and dads' gifts are wrapped to ensure a great surprise!
Holiday Caroling: December -Great Neck families gather at the school to ride through the neighborhoods on decorated fire trucks and sing holiday carols. Everyone then reconvenes at the school for hot cocoa and cookies. It's a fun evening for all!
After-School Activity Program: January -Parents offer a variety of classes (cooking, building a bat house, yoga, etc.), giving them a chance to share their own interests with students in an after-school classroom setting. The PTO provides a budget for supplies and a nominal per-classroom-hour payment to parent teachers, and then organizes and schedules the classes to meet the parent teachers' needs. Volunteer to teach one of these exciting classes!
Pancake Breakfast: January -Great Neck families gather to socialize over quite a fancy breakfast!
Pasta Supper: February-Great Neck families and staff dine together on a sumptuous pasta dinner provided by the PTO Board. All families have the opportunity to buy raffle tickets for theme-baskets (chocolate baskets, cat baskets, etc.) that have been prepared by Great Neck students in their classrooms. Baskets are displayed for several days before the event.
Arts Night: Tuesday, February - Great Neck students display to their families the artwork they've created throughout the year, and everyone gathers to try their hand at some fun crafts.
Camp Read-a-Lotta: March-After completing a reading challenge over a period of a few months, children are rewarded with a party full of learning-based activities, culminating in a sleepover at the school.
Family Game Night: April -The Student Council provides this evening of games, offering children and their families an opportunity to gather, play and socialize.
National TV-Turnoff 2003: April -Great Neck families pledge to turn off their sets-and tap their creativity instead-for a week. This year's theme is Earth Day, and students will be encouraged to use their spare time helping our environment rather than staring at a metal box!
Field Day: June - Students play games and compete for fun: This is a fun-filled day for all. Parents may want to attend for at least part of the day to partake in the activities and picnic with their children, so mark your calendars!
5th Grade Celebration: June - 5th graders say goodbye to Great Neck in style. The 5th grade parents start very early in the year to create a great good bye to the 5th graders who will be leaving Great Neck School and moving on to the Middle School.
