Message from the Principal

Southwest Elementary School is located not far from the Niantic River and surrounded by nineteen beautiful acres of land that we call our “playground.” We have approximately two hundred and thirty students and forty-five staff members who proudly share the school motto, “Southwest School has kids who smile.”

Our mission statement helps each of us ensure that we promote our school motto on a daily basis:

The mission of Southwest Elementary School, in collaboration with the family, neighborhood and extended community, is to ensure that each child builds a foundation of social and academic skills necessary to become a self-confident, contributing member of the community by:

• Instilling the desire to learn
• Enhancing our safe, supportive and flexible learning environment
• Appreciating the uniqueness of each child

Built in 1959 with an addition in 1963, Southwest School is a true partnership between parents, staff, students and the community. Over the years staff has changed, the administration has changed and students have moved through the grades but the atmosphere, collegiality and spirit has remained. The Southwest community remains focused on our goal to provide a comprehensive education for each child in a safe and secure learning environment
